Gum Disease During Pregnancy Can Cause Childbirth Complications And Low Birth Weight

The Inflammation In The Mother’S Body Triggers A Signal To Begin Labor

Oral health is very important for pregnant women. If they suffer from gum disease, the harmful bacteria in their mouth will be able to access the bloodstream via the bleeding gums. This causes inflammation in her body, and also an increased reaction of the body to infection. This can cause complications in pregnancy and negative outcomes, such as preterm birth and low birth weight. This is more common in economically depressed areas. Also, the bacteria in the mother’s gums can colonize the baby. The infections in the mother can raise the level of prostaglandin which is a substance that will signal the body to begin labor. Researchers found that due to the socioeconomic situation of pregnant women, very few had access to proper dental care, therefore decided to train the personnel at the ob/gyn clinic to teach the women how to avoid gum disease.
